Makaton Workshops

The Core Vocabulary is the starting point for everyone learning Makaton.  When anyone attends Makaton training, it is the Core Vocabulary signs and symbols that are taught and learned.

The Core Vocabulary was developed as a result of careful research.  It has the signs and symbols needed for everyday communication.  It is organised in Stages with early Stages containing signs and symbols for immediate needs like drink, eat and home.  Later Stages contain vocabulary for more abstract concepts like time and emotions.

Once you have learned the Core Vocabulary, you can use other signs and symbols with it. There are over 11,000 extra Makaton symbols and signs in the Resource Vocabulary.  This is organised in topics like food and drink.

Each session can be delivered in a variety of ways.

Each participant will receive a participants manual, which includes copies of signs and symbols learnt, and a certificate of attendance

Makaton Taster

  • The Taster gives you a general introduction into what Makaton is and who uses it, with the opportunity to learn a few signs and symbols too.

  • Participants receive handouts covering the vocabulary they have learned and general information regarding further Makaton training and Makaton resources.

Makaton Revision Sessions

  • For previous participants of Makaton Workshops I offer revision/refresher sessions

Makaton Level 1

  • Level 1 training is the starting point for learning Makaton. It is recommended for: parents, family members, carers and workers who need to use Makaton at home and in their workparticipants who need a more detailed knowledge about using and applying Makaton to develop the communication skills of others

  • You will also learn the signs and symbols from Stages 1 and 2, and some of the Additional stage, of the Core Vocabulary.

Makaton Level 2

  • You will learn the signs and symbols from Stages 3 and 4, and the rest of the Additional stage, of the Core Vocabulary.

Makaton Level 3

  • Level 3 training helps you to improve and develop your signing and symbol skills and how to use them effectively every day.

  • You will revise the signs and symbols you learned in your Level 1 and 2 training, and learn the signs and symbols for Stages 5 and 6 of the Core Vocabulary.

Makaton Level 4

  • Level 4 training completes the Core Vocabulary.

  • You will revise the signs and symbols you learned in your Level 1, 2 and 3 training, and learn the signs and symbols for Stages 7 and 8 of the Core Vocabulary.
